Setup Step 13 - Microsoft Project Installation (Optional)

The VPMi Professional allows Microsoft Project  users to download resources, upload tasks/milestones/assignments, and download timesheet time.  In order to use these features you need to complete the installation process.

Before you begin you need to have met a few prerequisites:

  1. Have administrative rights to your Windows based PC
  2. Have an installed version of Microsoft Project
  3. Have internet access
  4. Have an open port 1521 (this is the communication port we need to talk to the server)

There are 2 installation routines depending on if you have previously installed the Oracle Client software on your personal computer.  If you are unsure, you can look in your start menu for Oracle, go to control panel under Add/Remove Programs and see if it is listed, or ask a computer professional to help you locate an existing client.

Installation for PCs without an existing configured Oracle Client

Download the Oracle 10g Instant Client and the VPMi MSP Addin to a folder on your computer.

NOTE:  To download the Oracle Instant client and the VPMi Microsoft Project Add-In you need to:

  1. Register and login to this site
  2. Go to the top menu item Good Stuff - Downloads area
  3. Go to VPMi Software and Addins folder and download the Oracle Instant Client and the VPMi MS Project Addin

Double click on the Oracle Client.
Read the Oracle Client license agreement and if you agree click on Accept.
Review the setup instructions and the default installation path.  Please do not change the default installation parameters as the setup instructions are dependent upon them.  Click Install to continue and all the files will now be moved into the "C:\Oracle" directory
Next we need tell Windows the path to your Oracle files.  Right mouse click on My Computer and select properties.

Alternately you can navigate to your Start Menu - Control Panel - System to bring up the same dialogue box.

Select the Advanced tab in the system dialogue box.
The PATH variable we are after is in the Environment Variables so we need to click on this button.
In the Systems Variables lower window use the scroll feature to find the PATH variable.
Now that PATH is visible, double click on it to edit it.
In the variable name field we want to leave all the existing text in the Variable Value.  Scroll to the end and add the following text (as shown):

;c:\Oracle

Then click the OK button

Click OK to exit the Environment Variables.
Click OK to exit the System Properties.
We now need to install an ODBC driver for Oracle to connect to MS Project.  Open My Computer.
Open your C drive.
Open c:\Oracle
To setup the Oracle ODBC driver simply click odbc_install.exe.  A command window will flash very quickly and there is no other confirmation.
Now that Oracle Client is setup, we need to install the Microsoft Project Addin for VPMi.  This assumes that you already have a copy of Microsoft Project installed and functioning on this computer.  If you do not, stop here and continue once Microsoft Project is completely setup.

Otherwise double click on the installation package as shown.

Click next at the welcome dialogue box.
Click next for the start menu folder name.
Click Install to setup the Addin.
Click Finish to complete the installation.
Lastly, open Microsoft Project and confirm that the VPMi Addin is functioning properly.
